Toei Confirms World Trigger Reboot's First Arc — the Black Trigger Capture Arc Returns

AniList

Toei Animation is not remastering World Trigger. It is rebuilding it. The studio confirmed on October 1 that its World Trigger REBOOT project will open its first season with the Black Trigger Capture Arc — the story that started it all — and backed the announcement with new character designs, returning cast and staff, and a clear statement of intent: this is a full-scale reconstruction in the production style of the anime's acclaimed later seasons, not a fresh coat of paint on old episodes.

The announcement, delivered through the project's newly launched official social channels, gave fans their first proper look at the reboot's visual direction. New designs were revealed for the core cast — Yuma Kuga, Osamu Mikumo, Chika Amatori, Yuichi Jin, and Replica — accompanied by facial-expression sheets and three-view character designs that show exactly how the production is rethinking these familiar faces. The first character visual, featuring Osamu, dropped the same day, with Toei promising more visual reveals to follow.

Same Voices, New Look

The most reassuring news for longtime fans is how much of the original team is coming back. Morio Hatano returns as series director, Hiroyuki Yoshino handles series composition, and Toshihisa Kaiya serves as character designer — all three were key to the later seasons, making their return an important bridge between the existing anime and the reboot. The main voice cast is also intact: Tomo Muranaka once again voices Yuma, Yuki Kaji returns as Osamu, Nao Tamura as Chika, Yuichi Nakamura as Jin, and Hideyuki Tanaka as Replica. Keeping these voices is a particularly welcome choice, given how many years this cast has lived with these characters.

Why a Reboot Instead of a Remaster

The decision makes more sense the longer you look at World Trigger's history. The original adaptation's first season was famously hampered by production struggles, while the later seasons — produced with more time and care — showed what the series could look like at its best. Rather than asking new viewers to push through the rough early episodes, Toei is simply starting over with the lessons learned. The Black Trigger Capture Arc is the perfect place to begin: it is where the world, the rules of Trion combat, and the central trio's dynamic are all established.

No broadcast date has been announced yet, with Toei saying timing details will be revealed later. But the pieces are falling into place fast — the arc is confirmed, the cast and staff are locked, the visuals are public, and the official channels are live. For a series that has always been about strategy over spectacle, this is the most strategic move Toei could have made. The reboot is real, the foundation is solid, and Border is open for business again.
