Everything to Know Before 'Marshals' Season 2 Rides Back onto CBS on October 4

TMDB

Tomorrow night, Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe rides again. Marshals returns for its second season on Sunday, October 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS — streaming on Paramount+ — and it is bringing a familiar face back to the saddle. If you need a refresher before Kayce Dutton pins the badge back on, we have you covered.

Where season 1 left off

Season 1 ended with a bang — literally. Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) and Belle (Arielle Kebbel) survived an assassination attempt by Tom Weaver's armed men, and the season 2 premiere picks up with the two marshals driving away from the wreckage, piecing together that their attackers are tied to the assault on East Camp. A burner phone pulled from one of the dead men matches the phones used by the East Camp attackers, which means the mission is far from over.

At the center of it all is Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the former Navy SEAL and cowboy who joined an elite unit of U.S. Marshals to bring range justice to Montana. The first season dug into the psychological cost of the job — the tension between Kayce's duty as the region's last line of defense and the family waiting for him at home, including his son Tate (Brecken Merrill), Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) from the Broken Rock reservation.

Jimmy's back in the saddle

The biggest headline of season 2 is the return of Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom. After Yellowstone sent Jimmy to the historic 6666 Ranch in Texas — a storyline that seemed designed to launch a full spinoff — creator Taylor Sheridan shut the 6666 idea down, saying he would never fictionalize a real, working ranch. So instead, Jimmy is coming to Montana. White will recur throughout season 2, reuniting with Kayce and the marshals team, and star Luke Grimes has said the universally beloved character was simply too good to leave behind.

The season also expands the ensemble. Marque Richardson joins in the recurring role of Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns, and Morgan Lindholm's Maddie — the Bullet 'N Barrel bartender and Cal's estranged daughter — gets an expanded role. Behind the camera, showrunner Spencer Hudnut steers the season with Sheridan, David Glasser and the 101 Studios team executive producing.

Set your alarms: Marshals season 2 premieres Sunday, October 4 on CBS. The Dutton era is not over — it just got a badge.
