After a Record $2.5B Run, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Sets October 6 Digital Release
The biggest theatrical run of 2026 is finally coming home. Sony has set Spider-Man: Brand New Day for digital release on Tuesday, October 6, giving fans their first chance to own Tom Holland's record-shattering superhero epic after more than two months in theaters. The film will be available to buy or rent on digital platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV and others, with 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions reportedly following in December, complete with behind-the-scenes features and cast interviews.
The digital date lands about 10 weeks after the film's July 31 theatrical opening — a remarkably fast turnaround for a movie that was still raking in serious money deep into its run. Earlier reports suggested Sony had considered extending the theatrical window through November 16 because of the film's historic performance, which would have made Brand New Day Sony's longest exclusive theatrical run since Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the end, October 6 won out, and fans will not have to wait much longer.
The Records It Leaves Behind
To call the theatrical run historic is an understatement. Brand New Day opened domestically to $360 million, the biggest opening weekend in North American box office history, eclipsing Avengers: Endgame's $357.1 million. It posted the biggest Thursday previews ever at $72 million and the biggest opening day at $169.8 million. It later passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office, crossing $950 million in North America — the first film in history to do so — and roughly $2.5 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2026 and the third-highest-grossing film of all time.
The film also became Sony's highest-grossing release ever by a wide margin, on a reported production budget of around $225 million — a return on investment that studio executives will be studying for years.
What Made This One Different
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Brand New Day picked up Peter Parker's story after Doctor Strange's spell erased the world's memory of his identity at the end of No Way Home. The film's ensemble — Holland alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh and Tramell Tillman — gave it the feel of a genuine MCU event rather than a solo outing, and audiences responded by showing up in numbers no one had modeled.
The timing of the digital release is also strategic. With Avengers: Doomsday arriving December 18 with the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Marvel's own marketing machine is about to pivot hard to its next event. Getting Brand New Day onto digital and into living rooms in October keeps the web-slinger in the conversation right as the hype cycle for the holidays begins. After a run this big, the only question left is what the home entertainment numbers will look like — and whether any movie can ever touch them again.
