Toei Confirms the World Trigger Reboot Starts Over From the Black Trigger Capture Arc
The World Trigger reboot now has a shape. Toei Animation confirmed on October 1 that the project is a full "1st Season" reconstruction of the series — and it will open with the Black Trigger Capture Arc, going back to the very beginning of the Border saga rather than picking up where the old anime left off.
That choice says everything about the project's ambition. A reconstruction means rebuilding the story from the ground up: new character designs have been revealed for Yuma Kuga, Osamu Mikumo, Chika Amatori, Yuichi Jin, and Replica, giving the core cast a fresh visual identity for the reboot. But the creative spine is familiar — director Morio Hatano returns, and so do the main voice cast, including Yuki Kaji and Yuuichi Nakamura.
Why Start Over
Rebuilding from the Black Trigger Capture Arc is a deliberate reset. It is the arc that introduces Border, the Neighbor threat, and the central trio's dynamic — the foundation everything else in World Trigger is built on. This is where Yuma Kuga arrives with his mysterious Black Trigger, where Osamu Mikumo's idealism first collides with Border's military reality, and where Chika Amatori's extraordinary power marks her as the person everyone wants to control. By reconstructing the first season instead of continuing it, Toei gets to modernize the pacing, the visuals, and the production for an audience that has grown enormously since the original run, while giving longtime fans a definitive version of the story's beginning.
A Series Worth Rebuilding
World Trigger has always been the thinking person's battle series — less about power levels than about tactics, teamwork, and the clever exploitation of a rigorously designed combat system. That identity is exactly why a reconstruction makes sense: the Rank Wars and large-scale invasions that define the series deserve animation that matches the intricacy of their choreography. A ground-up rebuild lets the production design every trigger ability, every squad formation, and every battlefield with modern tools and a unified vision, rather than patching new polish onto old footage.
The returning director and cast are the bridge. Hatano steering the reconstruction, with Kaji and Nakamura back in their roles, signals that this is a reinterpretation rather than a replacement — the same story and voices, rebuilt with a new production behind them. The new character designs make the fresh start visible from the first frame.
What We Still Don't Know
No broadcast date has been announced yet, which makes this a confirmation of direction rather than a premiere announcement. But the direction is now clear: World Trigger is starting over from the Black Trigger Capture Arc, with new designs, its original director, and its lead cast intact. When the date lands, the Border saga begins again.
