Florence Pugh's East of Eden Storms Netflix's No. 1 Spot in Just Two Days

Netflix has a new reigning champion, and it did not waste any time getting there. East of Eden, the seven-episode limited series adapting John Steinbeck's sprawling saga, premiered on October 1 and by October 3 it had climbed to the No. 1 series position on the streaming service, according to Parade. The show also hit No. 2 on FlixPatrol's most-watched U.S. TV chart on October 2, per Men's Journal, a lightning-fast rise for a prestige literary adaptation in a season crowded with franchise heavyweights.

At the center of the storm is Florence Pugh, whose turn as the scheming and unsettling Cathy Ames is already being described as one of the finest performances of her career. The A.V. Club praised the performance in exactly those terms, and Pugh is not just the face of the series — she is also one of its executive producers, a sign of how personally invested she was in bringing Steinbeck's most dangerous character to life.

The first adaptation to tell the whole story

What sets this version apart is its ambition. The classic 1955 film adaptation, directed by Elia Kazan, covered only the final act of Steinbeck's novel. This series, created and written by Zoe Kazan — the granddaughter of the director of the 1955 film — spans the entire saga, following the Trasks and the Hamiltons across generations of love, jealousy, and betrayal. Jeb Stuart co-showruns, with episodes directed by Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre.

The cast around Pugh is stacked with heavyweights. Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders round out the ensemble, and the early critical response suggests the whole company is operating at a high level. Early reviews have been strongly positive, with critics awarding the series some of the best scores of the fall season so far.

The production filmed in New Zealand, whose dramatic landscapes stand in for California's Salinas Valley, and the result is a series that looks as big as its source material reads. Steinbeck's novel has long been considered nearly unfilmable in its entirety — the 1955 film wisely chose to tell just a slice of it. Taking on the whole thing in seven episodes is a gamble, but the viewership numbers suggest audiences were ready for exactly this kind of sweeping, character-driven storytelling.

Whether East of Eden has awards-season legs remains to be seen, but the opening-weekend momentum is real. For Netflix, which has been leaning hard into prestige limited series, a No. 1 debut within 48 hours is about as good as it gets. For Pugh, it is another reminder that few actors of her generation can carry a literary epic and make it feel this electric.
